鶹ý sophomore Isla Williams of Elkhart, Indiana, has won an from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) in support of collaborative, faculty-mentored research that she will conduct at Hope this summer.

Williams, who is majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology, will be supported by the $1,200 award as she conducts research full-time with Dr. Kristin Dittenhafer-Reed, associate professor of chemistry.  Williams also worked with Dittenhafer-Reed full-time last summer as well as part-time during the 2024-25 school year.

Her project this summer will focus on using biochemistry and cell biology to further understand mitochondrial function. Specifically, she will be working to characterize mitochondrial proteins that have no known function, but have been implicated in previous work in being important for cell function and human health.

is a nonprofit professional society that builds and empowers a broad community of molecular life scientists to advance discovery.  The society’s 11,000 members include researchers and scientist educators spanning students to senior scientists. Through dissemination of emerging scientific research, education and training initiatives and advocacy, ASBMB shapes and supports fundamental science that fuels future innovation. For more than 100 years, its community has pioneered new discoveries in the molecular life sciences that drive medical advances and therapies for many disorders and diseases, as well as many other applications ranging from environmental to agricultural.
