Captions play a vital role in ensuring everyone can fully engage with media content, and we’re committed to making captioning a campus-wide priority.
Captions Benefit Everyone
There is a growing understanding that captions benefit everyone. Captions increase comprehension, retention and engagement of video content and there are . Captions were originally developed as a tool for making video content accessible for people with disabilities, but there are many reasons why someone might turn captions on.
Why you might turn on captions
- The environment you are in is noisy or doesn’t allow audio to be played
- The audio is low quality or hard to understand
- The content is spoken in a language that you are still learning
In 2016, Oregon State University conducted a survey on
and found:
- 70% of students without hearing disabilities used captions at least some of the time
- 66% of English as a Second Language (ESL) students found captions "very" or "extremely" helpful
- 75% of students used captions as a learning aid
- 52% said captions helped improve comprehension
- The most common reasons why students used captions were to help them focus, retain information and overcome poor audio

- To promote faculty involvement in learning this accessibility tool as a best practice
Caption Your Content
Whenever you are showing audiovisual content on campus, turn on the captions. If you have content that isn’t captioned, here are a few things you can do.
- Join the Pilot

If you are a Hope faculty member using audiovisual content in your course design, we would love to partner with you to enhance the content with captions. Please complete the for more information.
- Use MacWhisper
- Try MacWhisper (an AI powered caption generator) that is installed on the computers in the Digital Media Lab in the library. Instructions can be found at the Digital Media Lab webpage.
- Save Videos in Google Drive
- As of spring 2024, all video content updated to your Google Drive associated with your Âé¶¹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø account will get automatically generated captions. They are not perfect but they can be very helpful. Any content uploaded prior to 2024 can be re-uploaded to generate captions.
Use Live Captioning
Do you give presentations or host events? Consider using live captions.

- Use Live Captions on Windows. The computer keyboard shortcut is Window Key + Control + L.
- Third Party Human Captions
- If you are hosting an event and you have a request to provide realtime captions as an accommodation, please reach out to captions@hope.edu to learn more. In general, we need at least six weeks in notice.
