Fulbright Summer Institute: Freshmen and Sophomores
Study in the United Kingdom during the summer after your freshman or sophomore year.
You're invited to apply for a Fulbright Summer Institute if you are a freshman or a sophomore who:
- Is a US citizen
- Has a GPA of at least 3.70
- Are NOT planning to graduate before May 2022
- Has NOT spent more than four weeks outside the U.S. in the past five years
These Institutes allow students to study at a university in the United Kingdom for three or four weeks in the summer of 2020 with (most) expenses paid. (Some Institutes require you to pay for some meals.) If you want to apply for a grant in the summer of 2020, here’s the timeline.

Order a copy of your transcript from the Registrar’s Office. You may not use the multi-page transcript available on your KnowHopePlus account. You must order a transcript from the Registrar. An “issued to student” transcript is okay.

Talk to your referees, and make sure they are willing and able to write your recommendations by February 10, 2020. Talk to them about the Summer Institute you want to attend, and show them your Personal Statement, as soon as it is in good enough shape. Turn in a draft of your Personal Statement and your Essay Response electronically, as a Word doc, attached to an e-mail. Your document must be double-spaced, with your name and the type of essay in the filename, sent to all three advisors: remillard@hope.edu, maiullo@hope.edu and gibbs@hope.edu.
See the Fulbright Summer Institutes web site and the Fulbright Summer Institutes Writing Requirements for information about preparation of these documents. Keep working on them, even after you’ve sent drafts to the advisors. We will also want to see your 300-word short answers by January 23. (You don’t need to do them by January 16).
We don’t have much time, so we want to see new drafts of your statements once a week, throughout January, 2020 and the first week of February, 2020.
